Birds are one of my favorite motifs to add to jewelry. This embroidered bird looks like he's weathering a coming storm!
Bead embroidery is a great way to incorporate fibers and fabrics into your jewelry-making projects. Cheri found a fabric print that included a cute little bird pattern she could embellish with seed beads and more thread. You can see more ideas for adding fabrics and fibers into your jewelry in this Artbeads Cafe Episode.
Choose your fabric. Cheri made a frame for her fabric using a square sticky note measuring 2-inches by 2-inmches. Use the frame to find just the right section of fabric to work with, then pencil the border of the frame onto the fabric.
Cheri used a size 6 embroidery needle and three strands of embroidery floss to outline parts of the design on her fabric. She used the split stitch in dark blue, light blue-gray, pink, green, and yellow thread colors.
Fill in the desired sections of fabric with seed beads. You can use a simple back stitch to add them onto your fabric. We used TOHO 15/0 round seed beads and Miyuki 15/0 Delicas.
Trim your fabric using the pencil outline as a guide. We trimmed ours to 2 1/4x2/14 inches. Cut a piece of beading foundation just slightly smaller than 2x2inchs and folded the fabric edges over all the way around the beading foundation. Tack them to the back of the foundation to hold them in place.
Cut a piece of matching fabric for the back, folding the edges in so that they don't show. Then, stitch the two fabrics together at the edges.
Trim the edges of your focal with TOHO 11/0 bead rounds in matte nickel-plated denim blue using a brick stitch edge.
Add scallops of beads to the bottom and top edges as desired. We made three picot edges at the top center of our focal using a denim blue 11/0 seed bead, a fire-polished 2mm bead in jet AB, and another seed bead for each sequence. For the bottom edge, we made three more picot edge scallops. With the thread coming out of one end jet bead, we made another picot edge sequence and brought our thread through the center jet bead. Repeat to make another scallop on this row. With your thread coming out of a jet bead in this row, Add a seed bead, a jet bead, a Dakota Stones 6-7mm labradorite round bead, a jet bead, and a 15/0 seed bead. Go back through the jet bead and the labradorite bead. Add a jet bead and a seed bead and go through the other jet bead in the second row of scallops. Finish off and trim your thread.
Stitch a 925/10 silver-filled 5mm 21 gauge closed jump ring to the back of each top corner of your focal.
Add a jet bead, a labradorite bead, and a jet bead to a 1 1/2-inch 22 gauge sterling silver eye pin and make a simple loop at the top of the beads. Repeat five times for a total of six links.
Attach a three-link length of silver-plated Figaro chain (One oval link, one figure-eight link, and one oval link) to one side of your focal using a TierraCast silver-plated brass small oval open jump ring.
Open the loop of a beaded link and attach it to the end of the chain and then attach a five-link length of chain to the end of this link. Repeat. Attach a 7 ¼-inch length of chain to the end of the last link.
Repeat steps 10 and 11 for the other side of the necklace.
Attach the 925/10 silver-filled 6x11mm lobster clasp with open jump ring to one end of the necklace. Attach a closed jump ring to the other end of the necklace using an oval jump ring.

Nice choice! All or most of the products needed for this project are shown
