Think outside the box when it comes to jewelry design with fun links, unique beads and other stand-out elements. Cynthia combined Matubo and Rulla beads in a flat herringbone focal, and used leather and trendy brass components as a backdrop for the beads. The result is a cool necklace that comes together effortlessly

Step-by-Step Instructions Expand All Steps

You are going to create a flat herringbone stitch with Matubo and Rulla beads. Start with a ladder stitch, using eight Czech glass 7/0 Matubo beads in turquoise green with Picasso. Steps 1-5 of the Basic Herringbone Stitch Diagram PDF will help you get started with the ladder stitch. Use this diagram to help you with the herringbone stitch for the rest of this project.

Basic Flat Herringbone Stitch Video Tutorial

Start the next row of the herringbone stitch as illustrated in the diagram. Add two Matubo beads. Then, use one Rulla 3x5mm Czech glass two-hole bead in jet bronze luster as the next two beads in the stitch. Just go through each of the stringing holes of this same bead instead of using two beads. Add another Rulla bead in place of two more beads. Then, finish the row with two Matubo beads. Repeat this step for a total of 11 rows.

For the last row of the stitch, use eight Matubo beads. Weave your thread so that it is coming out of the second to last bead in the row. Circle your thread around one of the loops on the antique brass bowed arrow link and pass back through the bead. Do this several times to make sure the loop is securely attached. Bring your thread out of the second to last bead on the other side of the row and attach the other loop of the arrow link in the same manner.

Fold a two-foot length of 1.5mm metallic tambo round leather in half. Bring the ends of the leather under the arrow link and through the fold of the leather. Tighten the leather around the arrow link. Slide three JBB antique brass-plated pewter scalloped ring beads onto the ends of the leather.

Glue the JBB 2mm antique brass tube swivel crimp end cap onto one end of the leather and allow to dry. Attach half of the antique brass-plated futurist toggle clasp set to the end cap using a 5.5mm antique brass-plated 21 gauge open jump ring. Repeat this step on the other end of the leather.
