Gemstone beads are a versatile style enhancement to any ensemble. Dakota Stones White African opal beads in the chip and round style are used together in this necklace to create a wonderful look full of dimension. As this necklace shows, there are so many ways to add gemstones to your designs. Beyond simple stringing, you can add them to silk and knot between them or put them on wire for fun beaded links. This project explores both techniques.

Step-by-Step Instructions Expand All Steps

Unwind Griffin silk bead cord from the card it comes on and knot the end (the end without a needle) to three links of 6.3mm antique brass-plated vintage patterned rolo chain. Make sure the knot is secure by creating an overhand knot or double knotting. You can even add adhesive for extra security.

Make another knot in the cord and add a Dakota Stones matte white African opal 8mm round bead to the cord. Knot after the bead and then add a Dakota Stones white African opal 5x15mm flat chip bead. Knot after the bead. Repeat the bead pattern six times and then add another round bead. Knot after the bead and then knot the end of the cord to another length of three links of chain.

Cut a length of 18 gauge Gold Artbeads Designer Wire approximately four inches long. Attach the wire to one end of your necklace by creating a wrapped loop. Slide on a round bead, and then attach the other end of the wire to a 7-link length of chain by creating another wrapped loop. Repeat on the other end of the necklace.

Cut another four-inch piece of wire and attach it to one end of the necklace by creating a wrapped loop. Slide on a round bead and attach the other end of the wire to a 9-link length of chain by making a wrapped loop. Repeat on the other end of the necklace.

Cut another four-inch piece of wire attach it to one end of the necklace by creating a wrapped loop. Slide on a bead and attach the other end of the wire to a six-inch piece of chain by making a wrapped loop. Repeat on the other end of the necklace.

Attach a 12x7mm antique brass-plated trigger clasp to one end of the necklace using a TierraCast medium oval brass oxide pewter open jump ring.
