Seed beads and two-hole beads work together to create a checkerboard effect for this headband.
When it comes to beads, you're not limited to jewelry We added Tila beads and TOHOs to this cool headband. The playful design and rich colors make the perfect hair accessory for any occasion. Learn how to make this design and start using beads in all new ways.
Before you start, measure you head to find out how long you would like your headband to be. Remember, there is a beaded section at the top of the headband and elastic at the bottom. The beaded section of our headband is about 10 inches long and the elastic is about 9 1/2 inches long.
Lay down two foot-long strips of the ultra micro fiber suede in slate blue side by side. Secure them to your work surface so they keep an even tension. You can tie them to the edge of a bead board, or use a clipboard to keep them in place. Tie the ends of the suede together in a knot.
Cut two yards of thread. Pinch your suede strips together so that the flat sides are touching. Secure your suede in this position by wrapping the center of your thread around the two strips and securing it with a knot. You can secure your thread with adhesive if you wish. Wrap the thread a few more times for even more security and knot it. Try to keep this wrapped thread as small as possible, since it should be hidden by a crimp later.
Since you wrapped the suede together with the center of your thread, you should have two long strands of thread left. Bring each side of the thread around the outside of each suede strip and then through the middle of the two suede strips and up. Repeat this once more.
Add one of the TOHO 8/0 bead rounds in dark copper to one strand of thread. Bring the other strand of thread through the bead in the opposite direction. Pull the threads tight so that the bead fits snugly between your two pieces of suede. Bring your thread around the suede as you did in step four to start the next row. Now, add two dark copper beads to one of the threads, bring the other thread through them in the opposite direction and pull tight. Bring your thread around the suede as you have done before. Add a Miyuki 5mm metallic matte copper rainbow Tila square tube bead to one of the threads. Bring the opposite thread through the same stringing hole and pull tight. Bring your thread around the suede and bring one side of the thread through the other stringing hole in the Tila bead. Bring the other thread through the same stringing hole in the opposite direction and pull tight. Finally, bring your thread around the suede, add three dark copper TOHOs to one side, bring the other thread through and pull tight. Now you are ready to start the main pattern of the headband.
Bring your thread around the suede as you did in step four. Add two dark copper TOHOs to one thread, followed by a Tila. Bring the thread around the suede on both sides as you have done before. Then, add two TOHOs to one side and thread your cord through the other stringing hole of the Tila already in the headband. For the next row, you will add the Tila to the thread first, followed by the dark copper TOHOs. Repeat this pattern until the beaded portion of your headband is the desired length.
Once your pattern is as long as you want, create a mirror image of the graduated pattern from step five. Wrap the two ends of the suede together as you did in step three.
Cut your elastic to size. Slip a TierraCast 6x2mm antique copper-plated pewter barrel spacer bead over one end. Add the end of your beaded headband to the inside of the bead, right over the elastic. Place a towel or cloth over the bead and use pliers to squeeze the bead closed around the elastic and suede, like a crimp. Repeat on the other end of the headband. Trim any suede or elastic, if needed.
