For this Halloween design, I expiremented with making jewelry that served multiple purposes. This one is both a decoration and a necklace.
This Halloween set is sure to put a spell on you The chain web doubles as a pumpkin decoration and an opulent necklace. Add the spider to the necklace or the pumpkin for a little more bling. A glam pumpkin like this one would make an excellent gift or party favor. Put it out as a fall decoration and then wear the necklace on any occasion
Purchase a decorative pumpkin from your local craft store. Our pumpkin is approximately 6 inches in diameter. The size of your pumpkin will affect how the chain web hangs from it, so keep that in mind.
The Web
For the center circle of chain, cut a length of 4x3 matte black-plated classic cable chain approximately 79 links long. Add a 4mm matte black-plated 21 gauge open jump ring to one end. Lay the chain stretched out on your work surface or suspended on a Chain Stä.
Cut eight lengths of chain 26 links long each. Attach a jump ring to one end of each piece. Connect one of the pieces to the jump ring on the chain from step one. Space the rest of the pieces out on this chain every 10 links. Use the existing jump ring on the end of the 79-link chain to connect the two ends of this chain together. Lay the circle over the stem at the top of the pumpkin so that the 26-link columns hang down around the pumpkin. It's best if the chains lay in the grooves of the pumpkin, but this is not necessary.
Cut eight lengths of chain 19 links long each. Use a jump ring to connect each end of these pieces between the 26-link columns, nine chain links down from the top of the pumpkin.
Cut eight lengths of chain 23 links long each. Use a jump ring to connect each end of these pieces between the columns, ten chain links down from the previous row.
String a 8mm bicone in Jet onto a 2-inch matte black-plated 20 gauge head pin. Add it to the end of one of the 26-link chains by creating a wrapped loop. Repeat for all of the 26-link chains. ,
The Necklace Connection
Cut two lengths of chain, each 5 1/4 inches long. Use a jump ring to attach a 12x7mm matte black-plated trigger clasp to each end of one chain. On the other chain, use a jump ring to attach a trigger clasp to one end and then attach the 5mm matte black-plated 18 gauge open jump ring to the other end. Connect one of the clasps on the first chain to the 5mm jump ring. This will become the necklace closure. You should now have a free trigger clasp at each end of these connected chains.
To connect the closure to the web, connect one of the trigger clasps to a jump ring on the middle row of one of the 26-link chain columns. Count three columns over and connect the other trigger clasp to the jump ring on the middle row of this column. Carefully lift the necklace off of the pumpkin.
The Spider
Cut four 5-inch pieces of black wire. Add a slight curve to each piece of wire by forming it around the outside of a drinking glass or something similar.
On one of the wires, use round nose pliers to make a bend on each side to form the legs. Bring the ends of the wire together and curve each end into a simple loop, toward the back. Connect both loops together using a jump ring. Repeat this step for the second wire. Leave the other two pieces of wire straight for now.
Mix your epoxy clay as detailed on the packaging. Form a tiny coin shape for the head and place it on a piece of plastic. Form a tiny, slightly elongated coin shape for the body of the spider and connect it to the head. Lay the wire legs on top of the clay, including the legs you haven't shaped yet. One set of shaped legs should be at the bottom of the head, with the unshaped legs below and one set of shaped legs should be at the top of the body, with the unshaped legs above. The unshaped legs will be beside each other.
Form a clay ball for the head and place it on top of the coin shape. Form another elongated ball and place it on top of the body, sandwiching the legs between the two layers. Shape the clay pieces all together so that they are smooth. A toothpick or small plastic knife edge can help with this. Reposition the legs if desired or necessary.
Thread a 3mm faceted round in Crystal Paradise Shine onto a 2-inch matte black-plated 20 gauge ball end head pin and trim. Insert into the top of the spider's head to create an eye. Repeat this step to make another eye.
Use the Crystal Katana to add the SS20, SS30 and SS5, SS7 and SS9 flatbacks in Crystal Paradise Shine and Smoky Mauve to the front of the spider. We started with the larger crystals and placed the smaller ones around them. While the epoxy clay is still wet, use a paint brush to apply powdered pigment or eye shadow to the surface. Allow to dry.
For the back of the spider, mix another batch of epoxy clay. Place a small amount on the back of the head and body. Place the SS5, SS7, SS9 and SS12 Jet flatbacks into the clay. Apply pigment to the clay while it is still wet and allow to dry. Now, bend the unshaped legs into place and curve the ends into simple loops, toward the back of the spider.
The Spider Connection
Thread an 8mm Jet bicone onto the 2-inch matte black-plated 20 gauge eye pin and finish with a simple loop. Attach one end of the eye pin to the jump ring attached to the head of the spider.
Cut two lengths of chain 20 links long each. Use a jump ring to connect each open end of the chain pieces to the eye pin. Attach a jump ring to one end of each piece of chain.
Cut a length of chain approximately 3 inches long. Connect one end to the jump ring at the bottom of the spider. Thread an 8mm Jet bicone onto a head pin and attach it to the end of the chain by creating a wrapped loop.
To add the spider to the necklace, add the necklace connection to the web as you did before and then add the open jump rings on the spider connection to each jump ring so that the spider lays over the top.
We used Black 18 gauge Artbeads Designer Wire to make the coiled tendrils at the top of the pumpkin. Wrap the wire around a felt marker or pen and then tighten the ends of the coils with a pair of round nose pliers. Use chain nose pliers to push the wire into the pumpkin to your liking.
To display the spider on the pumpkin, drape the web over the pumpkin. Connect the necklace connection to the spider connection using the open trigger clasps on the necklace connection and the open jump rings on the spider. Then, use the trigger clasps to grab onto the wire tendrils on the pumpkin and drape the spider over the web.
